Another cold mountain winter is on its way; is your heating system up to it? You may have put off a weak airflow or an odd noise since the spring. Then there is the matter of your furnace, when was the last time you gave it any thought prior to the first frost?
We are put in mind of such things by homeowners here in Western North Carolina come fall. As a family and locally owned firm out of Morganton, we at Herron Heating & Cooling, LLC make it our business to serve the region. Should you wish to discuss your system with someone local rather than be put through to a national call center, pick up the phone at (828) 624-6271.
There is no better time to put your HVAC in order than now, what with a little effort in the fall sparing you from an unpleasant January. Here to assist with that are some of our tips.
The Mountains Make Fall Maintenance a Necessity
Winters in this part of the country are no joke. The temperature has a way of plummeting once the season changes, whether you are in the valleys of Hickory and Marion or at the higher elevations of Boone and Banner Elk. Months of disuse can allow minor issues to fester in your heating system. It is far simpler to put a stop to them then than to be making repairs in the dead of winter. A furnace giving out on the coldest night is not merely an inconvenience but a potential safety concern for one’s family.
A Few Things to Do on Your Own
Most of these tasks do not require any special equipment. Before calling in a pro, you might:
- Put in a new air filter or see to the old one so as not to put undue strain on the system
- Put some distance between your outdoor unit and any debris, sticks or leaves
- See that the vents and registers in the house are unobstructed
- Turn the thermostat to heat and verify you are getting warm air
- Give ear to any grinding, rattling or banging on start up
- Put fresh batteries in the carbon monoxide detectors
They will do much to help, though they are no substitute for a proper inspection.
What We Will Cover in a Professional Tune-Up
Our team has over 22 years in the HVAC trade and we know how to put trained hands and eyes to work where needed. An autumn tune-up from us will involve:
- A look over of the heat exchanger for any wear or cracks
- Safety checks on all electrical components and connections
- Running tests on system controls and safety switches
- Measuring performance and airflow
- Lubrication of parts in motion
- Verifying the system is as efficient as it should be
Being licensed as an electrical contractor as well as in HVAC, we do not send you off to an electrician for wiring matters; we take care of that in house.
When a Tune-Up Is Not Enough
An inspection can tell you if your system has run its course and it is best to find out before a hard freeze. Be on the lookout for:
- An age of 15 years or more
- Bills that go up with no change in usage
- Uneven temperatures from room to room
- Cold days that test the system
- A tally of too many repairs
In the event of a replacement we will provide a free estimate. We can also put financing in place via Synchrony for anything from a Mitsubishi Electric service to a full system upgrade or furnace installation.
Make the Call Before the Cold Sets In
Too often we have a homeowner ring us only after the heat has given out, which tends to mean a wait in the middle of the season. Get your maintenance done in the fall and you will be ahead of everyone else.
